I don't know how long we sat there, side by side, speaking without needing to. Maybe it was minutes. Maybe the forest stretched time around us like soft clay, slowing it down so the silence could settle. The moon was still high. Still watching. She stood up slowly, brushing off her hands on her dark cloak. Her feet were bare, again and she moved like she didn't need the ground's permission to walk on it. Like the earth already belonged to her. Then something strange happened.
